Is oil, and natural gas a by-product of the earth's core?
I have heard that oil and natural gas is a by product from the earth's core. A scientist revieled these finding some time ago and "big Oil" dismissed his findings and him all togeather. Is this another conspirancy, sounds like it, but it has all makings for one.
There are a very few maverick scientists out there who think that oil and gas are derived from the Earth's mantle (not strictly speaking the core), and that "Big Oil" are somehow covering this up in order to maintain their profits (i.e. keep the price high by choking back supply).
I'm sorry to say that it is indeed a conspiracy theory of the worst kind, with no basis in fact. Originally proposed by Soviet scientists, more due to political differences with the Americans & West, who adhere to the biological theory, the idea was based on observations like: oil sometimes found in non-sedimentary granites and lavas, oil seeps along deep-seated crustal faults, remains of carbon in meteorites, and so-called oil shows in ultra-deep boreholes. The theory was tested by the astrophysicist Thomas Gold, who had a very deep borehole drilled into ancient Pre-Cambrian rocks in Sweden that had been fractured by a meteorite impact (the idea being that the fractures would allow the oil to seep up from the mantle and into the crust). The oil shows reported were a complete sham, deriving from the drilling fluids, and traces of methane were hardly surprising (since methane is known to vent from volcanoes).
It is established beyond reasonable doubt that oil is biologically derived. Oil in reservoirs is made up of a complex series of organic molecules, many of which can be specifically correlated by geochemists (using techniques such as chromatography and mas spectroscopy) to known organic "source rocks. The source rocks, typically shales or coals, are the ultimate origin of the oil, where the organic matter (algae, plant remains) is sufficiently concentrated and converted via heat and pressure to form mobile oil that is expelled and thence migrates to reservoirs, mostly porous sedimentary rocks, where it becomes trapped.
Almost all oil is found in or along the margins of sedimentary basins where the source rocks have been sufficiently buried to expel the oil. There are numerous "odd" occurances of oil in places you might not expect to find it, such as granites, volcanic rocks and metamorphic rocks, but all of these are easily explained by geological and tectonic juxtapositions without having to invoke any new theory of mantle derivation.
One last thing. Oil breaks down, under a normal pressure and temperature gradient, into gases at about 5 kms depth. Although pertubations in pressure and temperature in the earth's crust can result in places where oil is preserved deeper than this, there is no way that live oil could survive at the sort of temperature and pressure in the mantle, 100's of kilometres down.
Petroleum geologists spend millions of dollars / pounds of their companies and shareholders money to explore for oil and gas using tried and tested exploration methods in the context of the biological / crustal origin of oil. there is no way they would do this if there was the remotest possibility of an alternative origin.
